The idea to combine a lamp and a magnifying glass arose a long time ago. But only modern technologies have made the magnifying lamp the most convenient device. And not only for cosmetologists, but in general for everyone who needs high precision in their work. Who can use a magnifying lamp and what to look for when choosing it – in this article.
What’s in this magnifying lamp
The first lamps combined with a magnifying glass appeared already in the middle of the last century. They were used with might and main by craftsmen working with small parts – watchmakers, radio amateurs and modellers.
A small lyrical digression
Anyone who is soldering electronics knows about the existence of part holders called “third hand”. They are equipped with a magnifying glass, sometimes with a lamp.

I had such a “adaptation” ten years ago, I periodically used it when soldering. One day my wife noticed this thing. Since then, she has used it more than I have, mostly for manicures. I suspect this is how the first beauty lamp came about.
And then a magnifying lamp appeared in our house, and the situation changed to the opposite. The lamp turned out to be much more convenient than the “third hand”. So I partially dismantled the holder, leaving only the mount. Now, when the need arises, I use it with a magnifying lamp.
What are the advantages of a cosmetic lamp over a purely technical device?
Reliable fixation, not related to the fastening of parts. You can rotate the part to a new position and not fiddle with the magnifier setting.
An integrated lamp that does not interfere with your hands, always shining where it is needed.
Shadow-free illumination thanks to ring illumination.
Lots of features that make small jobs easier.
Characteristics of cosmetic lamps
Table lamps with a magnifying glass are compact and inexpensive, but perhaps only suitable for manicure. The large weight of the magnifying glass does not allow it to be taken far from the base: otherwise the stability of the lamp is lost. Therefore, only small objects can be placed under a magnifying glass – fingers, for example. Yes, and then there is a chance to overturn it with an awkward movement.

The bracket with a clamp allows you to firmly hook the lamp over the edge of a table or couch. This is convenient: you can free up space for objects of any size. Such a lamp is ideal for both cosmetologists (eyebrowists, lash makers, pedicure and depilation masters) and various craftsmen (jewelers, watchmakers, electronics and modellers).

The bracket for such lamps can be of two types – a flexible tripod or a pantograph. The flexible tripod gives you more freedom: the magnifier can be easily set up in any position. But flexible rods cannot withstand a lot of weight. Therefore, the size of magnifying glasses in such lamps, as a rule, does not exceed 7-10 cm in diameter. This limits the field of view and reduces usability.
The pantograph is able to support lenses with a diameter of 15-25 cm. The ideal choice when you need to increase the surface area of more than 1 cm 2 . For modelers and cosmetologists, this option is much more suitable.
There are also floor lamps. They are mainly used in cosmetic clinics where greater lamp mobility is needed.
The first cosmetic lamps contained an annular fluorescent light source (these are still found in many models today). Fluorescent lamps provide a soft, uniform light, but they also have enough disadvantages. They are quite large, heat up during operation, flicker under the influence of electromagnetic waves.
LED lamps with the same brightness are more compact and lighter. At the same time, they are several point sources located in a circle, due to which the illumination may be uneven. This is solved by a good diffuser or by increasing the number of LEDs. Both of these increase the price of the lamp.

It would seem that the larger the increase, the better. However, this is not quite true. The higher the magnification, the stronger the spherical distortion of the magnified image. In addition, the greater the magnification of the lens, the shorter its focal length ( the distance at which the image under the magnifying glass remains clear) . The shorter the focal length, the less space remains under the lamp for work. So, for a magnifying glass with a magnification of 1.75x, the focal length will be 33 cm. But for a magnifying glass with a magnification of 5x, the focal length will be only 6 cm. Do not crawl into such a space with your hands, only with thin tools.
Based on this, for cosmetologists, the best option would be a magnifying lamp with a magnification of 1.75x – 2.25x. But for those who work with small details with a thin tool, you can choose lenses more powerful – with a magnification of 3x-5x.
Focal length, cm
There are lenses with double magnification – a small lens with a larger magnification (5x – 8x) is built into the main lens with a small increase (1.75 x – 2, 25x). This lens allows you to comfortably work with large areas under it. And when the need arises for precise work in a small area, you can use a powerful lens.
The larger the lens, the larger the area will be enlarged. On the other hand, a large lens is heavier, bulkier and more expensive. The diameter must be selected taking into account how large the area of \u200b\u200bthe working surface should be increased.
beauticians, browists and lash makers will need lenses of the maximum size – 15-20 cm in diameter. This will allow you to see most of the client’s face without distortion.
Manicurists and other professionals working with small objects will need a lamp with a magnifying glass with a diameter of 10-15 cm.
the smallest lenses (5-10 cm) are suitable for electronics for soldering thin joints.
For small painstaking work with small details, table magnifying lamps are suitable.
If the object with which you need to work does not fit under a table lamp, it will be much more convenient to use a magnifying lamp with a bracket.
